Zippy E-reader Bag

Welcome back to Day 5 of our Marblehead Week of tutorials and giveaways! We hope you'll try out the tutorial below! Today's tutorial: Zippy E-reader Bag

All you need is a few Marblehead fat quarters, batting and a zipper! Stitch this quick padded bag and use it for an e-reader or handy carrying pouch for anything you like! Note: Finished bag measures approximately 6-1/2" x 9-1/2".

You'll Need:

• 5-6 Marblehead fat quarters (We chose blues and aquas, with a contrasting orange for the lining)
• 12" long zipper and zipper foot for sewing machine
• 8" x 11" piece of muslin
• 7" x 20" piece of batting
• Fabric marking pen

Choose a fabrics for backing, lining and the pocket. From the backing fabric, cut a 7" x 10" piece. From the pocket fabric, cut a 10" x 12" piece. From the lining fabric, cut two 7" x 10" pieces. From the remaining pieces of these fat quarters and the other full fat quarters, cut strips ranging in width from 1-1/2" to 3". 

Using the 45 degree line on a ruler, mark a diagonal line across the piece of muslin.

Choose your first two strips and layer them right sides together with raw edges lined up on the drawn line of the muslin. Make sure strip ends extend past the edges of the muslin. Stitch using a 1/4" seam allowance.

Press open. Trim excess strips past muslin edge (You will square this up at the end, but it can be easier to roughly trim them as you go--your choice).

Choose two more strips and add in the same manner.

Continue adding strips until the muslin is completely covered.

The back will look like this. With the back facing up, trim to measure 7" x 10".

Trimmed front:

To make the back side of the bag, fold the 10" x 12" pocket piece in half, wrong sides together, so it measures 10" x 6". Topstitch 1/4" from the fold line. Position on the right side of the backing piece, matching raw edges, and baste in place.

 Place a 7" x 10" batting piece down and position the pieced front on top. Lay the zipper face down on top and pin in place. Add a 7" x 10" lining piece face down and pin in place. Using the zipper foot, sew along the edge to secure the zipper, bag front with batting, and lining in place.

Fold back so zipper is exposed and lining, batting and bag top make a sandwich. Press away from the zipper. If desired, topstitch along the edge of ONLY the batting and bag top (fold the lining fabric out of the way). 

Repeat on the opposite side of the zipper using the bag back and remaining batting and lining pieces. 

With the zipper halfway open, arrange bag so the outer bag pieces and batting are on one side of the zipper and the lining pieces on the opposite side. Pin to secure layers.

Stitch around the outside, leaving a 4" opening in the bottom edge of the lining. Curve corners slightly if desired. Clip corner and turn bag right side out. Poke corners out as needed. Stitch opening in the lining closed before stuffing into the bag.

Welcome back to Day 4 of our Marblehead Week of tutorials and giveaways! Enjoy the tutorial below and check out the details of our Marblehead Challenge for a chance to win $2500 in prizes.

Today's tutorial: Chevron mini quilt

We can't get enough of chevrons! Make a mini quilt using four Marblehead prints and simple half-square triangles. 

You'll Need:

• 4 Marblehead fat quarters: teal, orange, lime, and light blue
• 5/8 yard backing fabric
• 1/4 yard binding fabric
• 20" square of batting
• Fabric marking pen

Cutting

From each of the teal and orange prints:

Twelve 4" squares

From each of the lime and light blue prints:

Six 4" squares

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all the orange squares, 3 light blue squares, and 3 green squares.

Pair a marked square right sides together with a green square. Stitch 1/4" on either side of the marked line.

Cut apart on the drawn line and press both HST units open.

Make 6 orange/light blue units, 12 orange/teal units, 6 light blue/teal units, 6 teal/green units, and 6 orange/green units.

Trim each unit to measure 3-1/2" square.

Lay out the HSTs into a chevron pattern as shown.

Join the HSTs into rows.

 Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top. 

Layer the backing right side down, batting, and quilt top. Baste and machine quilt as desired. This quilt is topstitched 1/4" on each side of the zigzag seams. 

Bind the quilt using two 2-1/4" x 42"strips. You're done!

Today's tutorial: A quilt-as-you-go hot pad

This quick and easy project is so addicting that you'll want to make more than one!

You'll Need: 

• 4 Marblehead fat quarters (you'll only use a bit from each, but you can use the remainder for the other projects we'll be featuring)
• 13" square of batting
• 13" square of heat-resistant batting

Cut a 3" square of yellow and position it in the center of the 13" batting square. Quilt the square and batting with straight lines, approximately 1/4" - 1/2" apart. 

Cut a blue piece measuring 2-1/2" by about 3-1/4". Position on top the yellow square, matching raw edges, and stitch.

Press open and repeat on the opposite side. Quilt straight lines on these blue pieces, starting closest to the yellow square and working out. 

Measure the width of what's already pieced and cut two more 2-1/2" blue strips slightly longer. Stitch in place on the top and bottom, aligning with the raw edges of the yellow square. You'll overlap the extra blue slightly, and that's okay. Press open and quilt straight lines as shown. 

Add 3" red strips in the same manner and quilt as you add them. 

Layer a 13" red backing square right side down, heat-resistant batting, and quilted hot pad top right side up. Baste. Quilt in the ditch on the seam lines to secure the layers together. 

Trim hot pad to measure 10" square.

Cut a 2" x 5" green piece. Fold in half lengthwise and press. Open and fold each raw edges to the center, and then refold on center line. Topstitch.

Position the green strip as shown on the back side of one corner of the hot pad, machine stitch in place, and then backstitch to secure. The raw edges and the stitches will be covered by the binding.

Cut (2) 2-1/2" x 22" green strips and bind the hotpad.

Disappearing Ninepatch Table Runner Tutorial

Welcome back to Day 2 of Marblehead Week of tutorials and giveaways! 

Today's tutorial: Disappearing Ninepatch Table Runner

Use this clever piecing technique to make an autumn-hued runner for your table!

You'll Need:

• Twenty 5" Marblehead squares
• 1/3 yard white solid
• 1/3 yard binding fabric
• 1 yard backing fabric
• 18" x 58" piece of batting

Cut sixteen 5" squares from the white solid. 

Lay out 5 colored squares and 4 white squares into a ninepatch as shown. Sew the squares together into rows and join the rows. 

Cut the ninepatch in half in both directions to create 7" blocks. 

Make 3 more ninepatches and cut to create a total of 16 blocks. 

Now it's time to lay out the runner! There are many different ways to lay out these disappearing ninepatch blocks. We'll show you a few options here, but you can experiment more on your own as well.

Sew the blocks into rows and join the rows. 

Layer the backing right side down, batting, and runner right side up. Baste and quilt as desired. Use four 2-1/4" x 42" strips to bind the runner.
