We're kicking off Marblehead Week today--a week of tutorials and giveaways here at Inspired by Fabric!
Each day we'll be sharing how-tos for some fun small projects using our favorite basics line, and we'll be giving away fat quarter bundles of Marblehead so you can try these projects yourself.
Today's tutorial: Wonky Log Cabin Mug Rug
You'll Need:
- 10-12 Marblehead fat quarters (you'll only use a bit from each, but you can use the remainder for the other projects we'll be featuring)
- 10" x 14" piece of batting
Cut a 3" square from your first fabric to be the center of the log cabin. Cut a 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" piece from fabric #2. Sew this to one side of the center square and press open.
Lay a ruler across the stitched pieces on an angle (slight or more obvious, your choice). Trim.
Cut a strip from fabric #3 that is any width between 1-1/2" and 3-1/2" and slightly longer than the beginning of your log cabin. Stitch to the angled trimmed side.
Rotate the unit, lay the ruler down on an angle, and trim.
Keep adding strips around the center square in the same manner.
Continue adding strips of various widths until your wonky log cabin measures at least 8-1/2" x 12-1/2".
Square up the unit to measure 8-1/2" x 12-1/2" (or a size that you prefer). You can give your piece a more wonky look by tilting the ruler.
The trimmed top:
Cut a piece of backing fabric measuring 10" x 14" Layer the backing right side down and then add the batting and pieced top. Baste the layers together.
Machine quilt the piece using a walking foot. Straight lines on a diagonal are a great option--easy and modern looking. Use a ruler and a water soluble fabric marking pen to draw the first line and then stitch additional lines using the sewing machine foot as a guide.
Trim the quilted piece and bind using 2-1/2" wide strips. And you're done!
Today we're giving away a fat quarter bundle of Marblehead prints! To enter to win, simply sign up to follow our blog using Bloglovin' or "follow by email" (both on the righthand sidebar) and then leave a comment below telling us your favorite fabric color. The giveaway will be open through Thursday, August 8th at 11:59 EST.
