Silent Night Sampler: Day 10

We're celebrating the season with 12 days of holiday-themed block tutorials using Ro Gregg's gorgeous and glittering Silent Night collection. Make sure you catch all of the tutorials, and then we'll show you how to assemble the blocks into a sampler quilt!

Today is Star Block #3. We call it a star block, but we also think it also looks like the bow on a present from the top view.

Cutting:
From the cream:
Four 4" squares

From the red:
Two 4" squares
Two 3-1/2" squares

From the green:
Two 4" squares
Two 3-1/2" squares

From the multi print:
Four 4" squares

Step 1: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 4" cream squares and one each 4" green and red square. Pair two cream squares with the unmarked multicolor squares, and one each with the remaining unmarked red and green square.

Step 2: Stitch 1/4" on either side of the drawn line and cut on the drawn line. Press both units open.

Step 3: Trim HSTs to measure 3-1/2" square. You'll have two red/multi, two green/multi, two red/cream, two green/cream, and four cream/multi HSTs.

Step 4: Lay out the HSTs with the two 3-1/2" red squares and two 3-1/2" green squares as shown.

Step 5: Sew the units into rows, alternating the pressing direction in each row.

Step 6: Sew the rows together to complete the block.

Here's the finished Star Block #3:

Silent Night Block Sampler: Day 5

We're celebrating the season with 12 days of holiday-themed block tutorials using Ro Gregg's gorgeous and glittering Silent Night collection. Make sure you catch all of the tutorials, and then we'll show you how to assemble the blocks into a sampler quilt!

Today's block is our second star block. This is a classic, but a favorite! You can make it using HSTs, but that method results in mirror image points, so you need to make twice as many. It's more efficient to simply cut triangles and stitch them together, as we show you here. We need two of this star block for the sampler; you'll see one in the tutorial and the second version near the bottom of the post.

This block measures 12" square finished.

Cutting:
From the cream:
Two 5" squares

From the green:
One 5-1/4" square
One 4-1/2" square

From the red:
One 5-1/4" square
Four 4-1/2" squares

Step 1: Layer the 5-1/4" red and green squares right sides together. Cut diagonally in both directions. Keep the triangles right sides together for the next step.

Step 2: Sew along one short side of a pair of stacked red and green triangles. Press open. The green triangle should be on the left, as shown below.

Step 3: Cut each 5" cream square diagonally in half once.
Step 4: Layer a cream triangle right sides together with a green/red triangle. Sew along the long edge.

Step 5: Press the unit open and trim to 4-1/2" square. When trimming, start by aligning the diagonal line in your ruler with the green/red seam line. Then make sure the other two seamed corners align with the 4-1/2" marks on the ruler, as shown with the pink arrows below. Trim these two sides, then rotate the unit and trim the remaining two sides so the unit measures 4-1/2" square.

Step 6: Lay out the four star point units, one 4-1/2" green square, and four 4-1/2" red squares into three rows as shown.

Step 7: Sew the squares and units into rows and join the rows to complete the block .
