We're celebrating the season with 12 days of holiday-themed block tutorials using Ro Gregg's gorgeous and glittering Silent Night collection. Make sure you catch all of the tutorials, and then we'll show you how to assemble the blocks into a sampler quilt!
Today's tutorial is Star Block #1.
(For the sampler, you'll need two of these...
see our second color option at the bottom of this post.)
Block measures 12" square finished |
Cutting:
From the cream wreath:
Four 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces
Four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" pieces
Two 3" squares
From the green print:
Two 3" squares
Twelve 2-1/2" squares
Four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" pieces
Step 1: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of eight 2-1/2" green squares. Noting the direction of the line, pair four squares on the 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" cream wreath pieces and four squares on the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" cream wreath pieces.
Step 2: Stitch on the marked lines, trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press open. Make four long star points and four short star points.
Step 4: Sew 1/4" on each side of the marked lines. Cut on the line and press half-square triangles open. Trim HSTs to 2-1/2" square.
Step 5: Lay out one HST, one 2-1/2" green square and one 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" piece as shown. Sew the square and HST together and then sew the longer green piece to the top.
Step 6: Sew a short star point to the bottom. Sew a long star point to the right side.
Step 7: Make four quarter blocks. Sew the quarter blocks together into rows and join the rows.
Here's the finished block:
