Silent Night Sampler: Alternate Border Instructions

Happy last week of the year! Earlier this week, we posted Day 12 of the Silent Night Sampler, which showed assembly directions for the quilt. Find that post (and links to all 12 days) here

We're back today with the instructions for creating our alternate outer border--the candy cane stripe!

This border is very easy to make--it's all half-square triangles.

To make the candy cane stripe border, you'll need an additional:
3/4 yard each of the cream and the dark red vine.
(You'll also need 3/4 yard less of the dark medallion print, as you'll no longer need that for the outer border. Although it's such a beautiful fabric--it would make a fantastic backing!)

Cutting:
From each of the cream and red prints:
Ninety-six 3" squares

Step 1: Draw a line on the wrong side of each cream square. Pair each cream square with a red square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut on the line and press units open. Trim to measure 2-1/2" square. Make a total of one hundred ninety-two cream/red HSTs.

Step 2: To make a side border, lay out forty-four HSTs in pairs as shown. Sew the HSTs into pairs and then join the rows to make a side border. Make two. Sew to the sides of the quilt.
Step 3: To make a  top/bottom border, lay out fifty-two HSTs in pairs as shown. Sew the HSTs into pairs and then join the rows to make a top/bottom border. Make two. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Step 4: Finish the quilt as desired.
