Silent Night Block Sampler: Day 3

We're celebrating the season with 12 days of holiday-themed block tutorials using Ro Gregg's gorgeous and glittering Silent Night collection. Make sure you catch all of the tutorials, and then we'll show you how to assemble the blocks into a sampler quilt!

Today's tutorial is the Bow Block:

Block measures 12" square finished

Cutting:
From the cream:
Two 3-1/2" squares
Three 2-1/2" squares
Three 2" x 3-1/2" pieces
One 2" x 6-1/2" piece
Fourteen 2" squares
Two 1-1/4" x 11" pieces
Two 1-1/4" x 12-1/2" pieces

From the red:
Three 2-1/2" squares
Six 2" x 5" pieces
Five 2" squares

Step 1: Draw diagonal lines on the wrong side of twelve 2" cream squares. Noting the orientation of the marked squares before, lay out two squares each on three 2" x 5" red pieces.

Step 2: Stitch on the drawn lines, trim seam allowance to 1/4", and press open. Use the remaining marked squares and red pieces to make three additional stretched flying geese units (the top unit in the photo below). You should have one unit each with the red angling to the right and to the left, and then four stretched flying geese units.

Step 3: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the three 2-1/2" cream squares. Layer each square right sides together with a 2-1/2" red square. Sew 1/4" on either side of the marked line, cut on the line, and press open. Trim units to measure 2" square. You'll have six HSTs.

Step 4: Lay out the pieces for one side of the ribbon block as shown. Lay out the remaining pieces to make the mirror image for the second side.

Step 5: Sew the pieces in each row together as shown.

Step 6: Sew the rows together to create the two sides of the bow. To make the center bow strip, lay out one 2" x 3-1/2" cream piece, one 2" red square, and one 2" x 6-1/2" cream piece. Sew the pieces together to make the center strip.

Step 7: Sew the bow sides to the center strip. Sew 1-1/4" x 11" cream pieces to the left and right sides and 1-1/4" x 12-1/2" cream pieces to the top and bottom to complete the block.
