During our Summer of Sewing series, we'll be featuring weekly tutorials using our new fabric collections (and giveaways, too!). Join us each week, sit back, relax, and then start sewing!
Our tutorial this week is for all the pet lovers! We've used the sweet prints from Love is a Four Legged Word to create a 24"-square pillow. Use it for a pet bed or use it yourself--perfect for both humans and furry friends!
Our large pillow features a fussy-cut center square from the collection's patchwork print (choose your own favorite part to showcase!), surrounded by subway tile piecing. Such a fun, scrappy look!
Let's get started!
You'll Need:
1/4 yard each 9 prints
1 yard patchwork print
27" square of batting
24" square pillow insert
Cutting:
From the blue check print:
(2) 2" x 9-1/2" pieces
(2) 2" x 12-1/2" pieces
(1) 2-1/2" x 42" strips; recut into (6) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" pieces and (2) 2-1/2" squares
From the remaining 1/4 yard prints:
(1) 2-1/2" x 42" strips; recut into (6) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" pieces and (2) 2-1/2" squares
From the patchwork print:
(2) 16" x 24-1/2" pieces
(1) fussy-cut 9-1/2" square (see below)
Make the pillow
Step 1: Pick your favorite motifs for the center square. Leave 1/4" margin beyond the motifs you want to showcase; parts of various motifs will be cut off and that's okay.
Step 2: Sew 2" x 9-1/2" blue check strips to opposite sides of the fussy-cut square. Sew 2" x 12-1/2" blue check strips to the top and bottom.
Step 3: Lay out (12) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" pieces and (12) 2-1/2" squares on the sides of the center square as shown, making sure you're happy with color placement.
Step 4: Sew the pieces and squares into rows and join the rows to make pieced sides.
Step 5: Lay out the top and bottom sections as shown, making sure you're happy with color placement.
Step 6: Sew the pieces and squares in the top and bottom sections into rows, and join 3 rows on the top to make the to section. Do the same for the bottom section.
Step 7: Sew the side sections to the center square and the top and bottom sections to the top and bottom. Your pillow top is finished.
Step 8: Fold the long edge of (1) 16" x 24-1/2" piece over 1/4" (wrong sides together) and then over 1/4" again. Stitch to created a hemmed edge on the first pillow back piece. Make a second pillow back piece.
Step 9: Lay the pillow top right side up. Position the first pillow back piece right side down, matching raw edges. The hemmed edge should be across the middle of the pillow.
Step 10: Position the second pillow back piece right side down, matching raw edges. The two hemmed hedges should overlap in the middle to create an overlapping envelope pillow back. Pin in place and stitch around all four sides of the pillow using a 1/4" seam allowance.
Step 11: Clip corners and turn pillow right side out.
Step 12: Stuff with your pillow insert and enjoy!
