Hi there! My name is Shannon Brinkley, and I am debuting my first line with Paintbrush Studio this Fall! Today, though, let's play with solids. You will see a lot of solid fabrics used in modern quilting. They can offer a very clean and minimalistic look, and there is just so much you can do with them. For this project, I used classic black and white with four shades of blue. This ombre look has been extremely popular in all areas of style and design the last few years, and with reason-- it's just a really simple, modern, and lovely effect.
Geese + Ombre, A Modern Table Runner
Materials List:
- 4 fat quarters, or 1/4 yd cuts (I used various shades of blue Prairie Cloth Solids)
- 1 yd light fabric (I used white Prairie Cloth)
- 1/8 yd fabric for plus blocks (I used black Prairie Cloth)
- 1.5 yds backing fabric
- 18" x 59" cotton batting (I use Warm and Natural)
- 1/3 yd binding fabric
- Thread: cotton thread that coordinates with background fabric, white all-purpose thread
- Basic Sewing Supplies: scissors, rotary cutter, ruler and mat, marking tool, pins
Instructions:
Half Square Triangles (HST)
- Cut four 7” blue squares and four 7” white squares
- Lay a white square on each blue square, right sides together, pin in place.
- Sew ¼” seam around the outside edge of the squares.
- Cut each square on the diagonals, forming 4 HST.
- Press seams open.
- Piece 2 matching HST together to form a flying goose. Repeat for rest of HST. You should now have 8 flying geese. Press all seams open.
- Piece 4 flying geese together, pointing in the same direction. Repeat for other 4 geese.
- Press seams open, set aside.
Strip Piecing
- Cut 1 strip of white fabric 1.5” x width of fabric (WOF). Then cut in half. So you now have 2 strips that are 1.5” x at least 18”.
- Repeat for the black fabric.
- Piece the 2 white strips and 1 black strip together: white, black, white. Press seams open.
- Cut the pieced strip every 1.5” (12 total).
- Cut the black strip every 3.5” (6 total).
- Piece together: pieced strip, black, pieced strip, to form a plus sign. Press seams open.repeat for all 6 plus signs.
Sashing
- Cut two 2.5” strip x WOF.
- From those strips, cut:
- two 8.5” strips (sides)
- one 13.5” strip (middle)
- four 3.5” pieces (between plus pieces)
- Piece together according to the diagram.
- Attach the flying geese pieces to the left and right of the plus sign section.
Border
- Cut three 2.5” strips x WOF.
- Measure and attach borders.
Finish
- Press/Piece backing
- Baste
- Quilt as desired (I quilted it in straight lines, 1/2" apart)
- Attach binding
