Tute-Happy Summer: Tablet Case

We're continuing our Tute-Happy Summer series today with a tutorial for an easy tablet case--whether you're taking it to the beach or just relaxing at home, make sure your tablet is protected in style! We've paired two fabrics from the Jungle Party collection--a cool animal print wavy stripe and a coordinating animal toile. Hiding inside those fun prints are two layers--Peltex, which provides stiff protection, and fusible fleece, which provides cushioning.  The case is just large enough (approximately 9" x 12") to comfortably fit most tablets. Enjoy the tutorial and then find the details at the bottom of this post for a chance to win a bundle of Jungle Party prints to play with!

Materials:
1/4 yard zebra stripe
1/2 yard green toile
12" x 18" piece of Peltex
12" x 18" piece of fusible fleece
One 12" or 14" zipper in coordinating color

Cutting:
Note: Pay attention to directionality of the fabric as you cut.
From the zebra stripe:
Two 7" x 12-1/2" pieces

From the green toile:
Two 3" x 12-1/2" pieces
Two 9-1/2" x 12-1/2" pieces

From the Peltex:
Two 9" x 12" pieces

From the fusible fleece:
Two 9" x 12" pieces

Step 1: Sew each 3" x 12-1/2" green toile piece lengthwise to a 7" x 12-1/2" zebra stripe piece.

Step 2: Position a 9" x 12" Peltex piece on the wrong side of an outer bag piece. Press in place and topstitch 1/4" on either side of the outer bag piece seam, using contrasting thread. Repeat with remaining outer bag piece and Peltex piece.

Step 3: Center and fuse a 9" x 12" fusible fleece piece to the wrong side of each 9-1/2" x 12-1/2" green toile lining piece.

Step 4: Lay an outer bag piece right side up and position the zipper on top, right side down, with edges aligned. (Note: If you use a 14" zipper like we did, you'll have excess which you'll cut off later.) Position closed zipper so zipper pull end is aligned with the edge of the fabric. Position a lining piece on top, right side down, and pin in place. The zipper should be sandwiched between the outer bag and lining pieces.

Step 5: Using a zipper foot, stitch. Flip the lining around the bag and press so the lining and bag are wrong sides together and your bag in the making looks like this:

Step 6: Repeat on the opposite side of the zipper using the remaining outer bag and lining piece. Here's what it should look like now on the outside:

And the lining side:

Step 7: Unzip the zipper at least halfway. Align bag pieces so both lining pieces are on one side of the zipper and both outer bag pieces on the opposite side, right sides together. Pin in place, matching side seams on the outer bag side.

Step 8: Sew around the outside edge of the case, leaving a 7"-8" opening along the bottom edge of the lining for turning.
Step 9: Turn right side out. Slipstitch the opening in the lining closed, and enjoy!
