Star Sampler Block #5

Happy Monday! Today Heidi Pridemore from The Whimsical Workshop is here sharing block #5, the double star. This blocks looks similar to Connie's block on day #1 but is constructed differently; you can use whichever technique you prefer. Amazing how different print choices make similarly designed blocks with such variety!

This sampler series of nine star blocks began last week and will run all of this week as well. The star blocks are made using Ro Gregg's Marblehead Venetian Glass fabrics. If you missed blocks #1-4, you'll find links for them at the bottom of this post. Plus, don't miss the chance to enter a giveaway to win a bundle of these gorgeous prints!

Heidi: Hi everyone! Here's my block for the Star Sampler. I chose to use the cream/gold scroll print as the background and made star points using flying geese units. Here's the tutorial:

Fabrics and Cutting:

Fabric A- Background (cream/gold scroll)
            • Cut (12) 2 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles
            • Cut (8) 2 ½” squares

Fabric B- Inner Star Points (peach/aqua)
            • Cut (8) 2 ½” squares

Fabric C- Outer Star Points (teal/blue)
            • Cut (16) 2 ½” squares

Fabric D- Star Center (multicolor print)
            • Cut (1) 4 ½” square

Double Star Instructions
1.     Place one 2 ½” Fabric B square on the left side of one 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric A rectangle, right sides together (Fig. 1). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 1). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 2). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle leaving a 1/4“ seam allowance.
2.     Place another 2 ½” Fabric B square on the right side of the 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric A rectangle, right sides together (Fig. 3). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner (Fig. 3). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 4). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle leaving a 1/4“ seam allowance.

3.     Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to make four inner star points.
4.     Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with eight 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric A rectangles and sixteen 2 ½” Fabric C squares to make eight outer star points (Fig. 5).

5.     Follow Figure 6 to sew together one 4 ½” Fabric D square, four inner star points and four 2 ½” Fabric A square to make the block center.

6.     Follow Figure 7 to sew together the block center, eight outer star points and four 2 ½” Fabric A squares to complete the 12 ½” block.

6.     And you're done!

Thanks Heidi!

  1. Pretty block! I follow via GFC.

  2. I follow by e-mail. I like being able to quilt from my stash and buy fabrics I like without a particular project in mind, so most of my quilts are scrappy.

  3. I follow via GFC. My quilts are usually fabrics I gather into a 'collection' thought a jelly roll or two can creep in. I am building a scrap stash of batiks for a future scrappy quilt. Thanks for a great sampler series - maybe this will be what my batik scraps will be for.

  4. I follow by e-mail. I mostly make quilts from more than one fabric line, but that doesn't makethem scrappy, just differently co-ordinated...

  6. I follow with GFC. I do make scrappy quilts but many of my quilts are made with fabrics that I bundle together myself for my 'personal collection'.

  10. I am following. I usually make scrappy quilts with what I have on hand, but if I have a designer collect I will usually use that.

  12. I follow by email as well as Facebook and Google/blogger. all depending on which I start with first. I may try to use just one fabric line, but often the LQS may not have the entire line, or I need one other color/design to complete what I plan on doing. Often I find it is a more neutral, such as the cream scroll in this collection, that is not carried.

  16. Lovely star. I follow with GFC. It depends on the pattern, block, design whether I go with a collection or scrappy. But I am happiest when I scrap.

  17. I follow via GFC and email. I don't think I've made any quilts from just one collection. Even if I love the whole collection, I will add pieces of other things to make it my own. That also lets me spread the collection prints around and use bits of them in other projects. Even if I just have charms or a layer cake I like to have some left to use another time.

  18. I do like that block. I generally start out with one collection and then add other lines so by the time I have all my fabrics, it's scrappy. I get email newsletter. Thanks.

  19. I am already following via email. When I first started learning to quilt I tried to stick to fabric collections and still do, but I'm seeing myself change to using more scrappy projects now.

  20. I tend to mix and match collections and choose colors and prints that go together. It is nice when a collection has everything I want, but usually there are only a few prints that I love.

  21. I already follow thru Email & Bloglovin :)

I love Scrappy quilts...but depends on what I make...Collections are better. (was soooo "addicted" to Marmalade collection!!! NOW it's Sewing Box!! lol)

  24. This is a great star. I'm following. I like controlled scrappy in most cases.

  25. I follow via email and bloglovin. I tend to use fewer colors or a collection in most of my quilts, but I've also done some that look scrappy. One was strips from 18 different fabrics in my stash. Others were either strip pack/jelly rolls or charm packs, or FQ bundles. I think it's fun to do all different types.

  26. I usually use fabrics from the same line and will add matching fabrics from other lines if I need to...but if I make something scrappy...anything goes, I mix and match.

  27. I'm more of a scrappy quilter, but what I use mostly aren't really scraps--they're collected. (I follow by email.)

  28. Most of my quilts have been one collection quilts. Just recently I've made a couple of scrappy quilts with the leftovers...both ways are fun! Thanks for sharing your tutorial and for the chance at your wonderful giveaway.

  30. I am a new email follower via 2bquilting247 at hotmail dot ca. If I participate in a workshop at my local quilt shop I will usually pick a line. I love working with batiks and love the look of scrappy quilts too.

  40. Thanks for the great tutorial for this Block #5. This is so much fun to build a collection of these and learn to sit down and put together different ones for a quilt. I'm new, but I'm learning!!

  41. I follow via Bloglovin' and I do a lot of both. Many of my quilts are scrappy but sometimes a collection just catches my imagination and I have to own every piece of it! pbstrand@msn.com

  44. I follow by email. I make a mix of quilts - some quilts are made from just 1 fabric collection, and the associated pattern from that collection, and others are a miss mash of fabrics from all over the place.

  49. I follow via e-mail. :) I like scrappy quilts and mostly buy remnants. Although I did win a collection of fat eights of Kate Spain's Sunnyside awhile back and am making a churn dash quilt with it. It's nice to know it all goes well together. :)

  50. I have done some of both; collections and scrappy. I'll even put together my own collection of fabrics depending upon the pattern. It's so fun to have the freedom to choose whatever I want to do!

  51. I follow the Inspired by Fabric blog. I use what ever fabric goes together and depending on the pattern, usually make a planned block. I am really afraid of scrappy because I don't trust my ability to make the scraps go together.

  52. I follow on bloglovin, Google, and email. I tend to be scrappy and mix collections if they look good to me. Thanks
